Put your feet up at Dover Castle

Obscure location: Dover Castle rarely gets crowded
10 April 2012

This is a fine old Sam Smith's pub tucked away in a mews, just a short distance away from the hustle and bustle of Marylebone Road and Portland Place.

And, as it's a Sam Smith's pub, the well-kept beer is what you'd expect - excellent if you like Sam's, not so good if you don't. There's decent enough pub grub (filling a hole, rather than tickling the taste buds and there are no 21st century distractions such as piped music, TV or gaming machines - another Sam Smith's thing.

The pub rarely gets crowded, although it picks up after work for a couple of hours. It is on the tourist map and, every so often, you'll find a few in here, but it's in such an obscure location, that only a few manage to find it.

If you're a fan of Sam's produce, the Dover Castle is just the place to put your feet up and read a good book or ponder eternity. And it's open for Sunday lunch too.

FOOD REVIEW: Traditional home-cooked pub grub. Hearty and probably fairly priced for location.
