Australian bars in London 2019: Best Aussie hang outs in the capital

For homesick Aussies in the capital, a yabber and a couple of tinnies in one of London’s Aussie-centric bars should make you feel more at home.

We poms may be a good 10,000 miles away from the white sands of Bondi, but our cousins from Down Under have taught Londoners well in the ways of Australian bar culture.

The famed Walkabout bars have walked their last in London (the final venue in the capital closed in 2017), but an influx of new hotspots channeling the country’s cafe culture means that the laidback Antipodean spirit is still alive in London.

From pubs to party places, wine bars to cocktail spots these are the best bars for finding a slice of Australian sunshine in London.

The Slug

For fully-pumped Aussie fun, The Slug is the place to go. The Fulham bar is a home-from-home for Australians, Kiwis and South Africans, with live sports and themed party nights at its southern hemisphere-led heart. Down Under shenanigans happen all year round with Bogan Bingo hosting an evening of snakebite and all round silliness every Thursday.

Scarlett Green

By day this Soho cafe is all flat whites and smashed avocado, but by night it’s a bonza bar boasting the capital’s largest Australian wine list. Scarlett Green – one of the Daisy Green group of Aussie-friendly hotspots – is a slickly designed slice of contemporary Australia, filled with art and even a mural of the Sydney Opera House.

Clapham is London’s Little Australia – if you didn’t know it, its pub landlords certainly do. It’s not hard to guess that The Falcon in Clapham North is an Aussie-friendly pub – it’s bright yellow and the entrance is flanked with palm trees. Located just a few minutes from Clapham Common, the base of London Aussie Rules football team Wandsworth Demons, you’re bound to find an Australian punter or ten here. Curiously, a pub of the same name in Clapham Junction is also an Aussie epicentre – so even if you get confused, you’ll probably still find friends.

Antipode

Coffee is king at Antipode – but that means its espresso martinis are the Queen of the night. This coffee shop and lunch spot turns into a cocktail bar in the evening, serving up a mean espresso martini with London-based Square Mile coffee and Australia-hailing Mr Black coffee liqueur. Australian craft beers also take centre stage here, with a signature kimchi and cheese toastie available in the evening to soak up your beverage exploration.

Infernos

This might sound like an unlikely addition to the list, but Clapham nightclub Infernos is a veritable nerve centre for Australian party fellas and sheilas – even Hollywood star Margot Robbie has confessed her love for the club. It’s not a Australian bar as such, but many expats flock to its dancefloors week in, week out. It’s sweaty, it’s cheesy and it made it into our list of “so-bad-they’re-good" club nights in London – but are you going to argue with Margot?

Milk Beach

This cafe loves Australian coastal culture so much, it even named itself after a secluded beach that overlooks Sydney Harbour. Again, brunch and coffee is the name of the game by day, but night time sees the light and bright spot turn into a chic natural wine bar. Australian wines pepper the menu, most notably Momento Mori’s Staring At The Sun, an orange wine from Victoria.
