The Connaught hotel celebrate new Christmas tree designed by Sir Michael Craig-Martin

Eye catching: the hotel's new tree

Another London Christmas tree has been revealed and it's set to be all over Instagram.

Tonight, November 22, upmarket Mayfair hotel The Connaught unveiled their new tree, designed by conceptual artist and Royal Academician Sir Michael Craig-Martin. Craig-Martin is best known for his work The Oak Tree, which hangs proudly in the National Gallery of Australia.

Standing nine metres tall on Carlos Place, the giant Norway spruce is adorned with 12,000 bulbs that, for the next month or so, will constantly change colour, glow and fade throughout the night.

Commenting on the tree, Craig-Martin said: “I wanted to focus on what I think of as the two essential elements of a Christmas tree – the tree itself and the lights. It struck me that however beautiful, most Christmas trees are static, unchanging. I wanted to make a tree that was dynamic."

This is the fourth Christmas collaboration with an artist for the luxury hotel, which has previously worked with Tracey Emin, Sir Anthony Gormley and Damien Hirst.

During a light-hearted evening, The Connaught spoilt guests with free mulled wine, mince pies, gooey smores and hot chocolate. Nearby, Mount Street switched on their Christmas lights in unison with the hotel, celebrating with a street party.

Among the festivities were live DJs, both Christian Louboutin and Linda Farrow were serving champagne in store (with Linda Farrow also offering complimentary monogramming service), while LOND laid on a whisky tasting.
