The best music photography of last year is being showcased in London as part of a six day exhibition opening today.

Based on the NME Music Photography Awards with Nikon the exhibition features the most striking and original music photography of 2011 from both amateur and professional photographers.

Images from categories including Live, Portrait, Reportage, Festivals, and Under-18s are being showcased at the event, as well as winning work by professional photographers in the Photographer of the Year and Outstanding Contribution categories.

Amongst the work on display is a collection from NME photographer Dean Chalkley, winner of the Outstanding Contribution to Music Photography Award, and David Baird, winner of the Professional Photographer category.

On his success David Baird, who has been a freelance photographer for two years and has worked with some of the world's biggest music stars as well as collaborating with fashion icon Paul Smith, said: "I was so pleased to win my category and it's really nice to get that kind of recognition alongside such established and well-respected photographers.

"I always try to work closely with the artists I shoot and I'm very proud of the winning image (The Subways) because of its energy and the way it shows the band performing."

"This competition is so useful for us to get the kind of exposure we need in what is a really competitive industry", he added.

Having been rated by www.NME.com users, entries were then judged by an expert panel headed by photo director for NME and NME.com Marian Paterson, alongside renowned music photographer and 2010's Outstanding Contribution winner, Andy Willsher.

The NME Music Photography Awards with Nikon exhibition opens today at theprintspace and closes on January 11.
