Secret Cinema announces Romeo + Juliet as largest ever production

Secret Cinema has announced its latest screening, which is expected to be its largest ever production.

The group will be bringing to life Baz Luhrmann’s much-loved 1996 adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the title roles.

Secret Cinema are headed outdoors for the shows and say they expect audiences of almost 5,000 people per night. The film will run from August 9 - 19 later this summer at a secret location.

Tickets go on sale at noon on Friday May 18 and can be bought here. Prices start at £49 plus booking fees, with VIP packages from £85 plus fees.

Rather than focussing on the fierce rivalries of the Montague and Capulet families, the group say they will celebrate on the play’s ideas around “peace, redemption and salvation”.

Fabien Riggall, who founded Secret Cinema, said: “We are excited to launch our summer festival with the perfect film in Romeo + Juliet. The film is the perfect title to bring to life and confronts some profoundly important social issues, such as youth violence, that remain as relevant in London today as they did in Shakespeare’s Fair Verona. We will be working with a London based charity who work towards tackling these problems.

“We are excited to take Secret Cinema into the fields re-imagining the festival format by creating large scale magical immersive worlds across an entire outdoor location, where the audience live inside the most loved films of all time.”

The group is also promising live bands, DJs, choirs and artists. The show’s creative director, Matthew Bennett said: “Each night will see thousands of people take part in a carnival of performance expression, a living world of one of the greatest love stories ever told.”
