Remembrance Sunday London 2019: Parades, services, memorials and where to pay your respects this weekend

Millions of people around the world will commemorate the anniversary of the end of the First World War as part of Remembrance Sunday events this weekend.

London is playing host to a series of memorial services and tributes, offering those in the capital the chance to pay their respects.

The UK has traditionally held a two minute silence at 11am on the Sunday closest to Armistice Day (November 11), which commemorates the end to fighting on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in 1918. It will be observed this year on Sunday November 10.

The most high-profile memorial event in London is the service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, with the Royal British Legion coordinating the March Past.

The service begins at 11am, although the Cenotaph will be open to the public from 8am for those wishing to secure a position near the monument.

The Royal British Legion detachments form up on Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall from 9am, before the two minute silence at 11am. For more information, head here.

There’ll also be a service of remembrance at St Paul’s Cathedral. All are welcome to attend the service, which begins at 10.15am on Sunday.

The Imperial War Museum is hosting an Armistice Ceremony this Sunday at 11am.

The service will feature a performance of The Last Post bugle call, before a violin recital from Maxwell Harrison-Obefami, a Mayor of London Music Scholar at the Lambeth Music Service. For more information, head here.

Westminster Abbey is also hosting a remembrance service at 10.30am on Sunday, as well as offering visitors the chance to visit the Field of Remembrance — a field of scarlet poppies on crosses across the Abbey’s grounds recognising those lost in wartime conflict. The Royal Air Force Museum in is welcoming people to pay their respects with a service in Hangar One this Sunday from 10.30am. There will then be a two-minute silence at 11.00am, before the North London Military Wives Choir perform for guests. For more information, head here.
