Notting Hill Carnival is just around the corner, which means a bank holiday weekend filled with food, sequins and – we've lucked out – sunshine.

Carnival this year takes place on Sunday August 25 and Monday August 26. It's set to be a busy one.

Despite the reputation the Carnival is sometimes burdened with, with a little planning, it can actually be a great place to take the kids.

Sunday has long been designed to be better for little ones, and is aptly is known as Family Day. Here's everything you need to know.

When is Family Day?

Family Day is on Sunday – a calmer start before the full party begins on the bank holiday Monday.

What is Family Day?

Family Day is traditionally less busy than Monday, but there's still plenty going on.

The Children's Parade will run all day, complete with bright costumes and music that demands dancing.

There will also be a host of family-friendly activities and events throughout.

Keep in mind that just though Sunday is slightly quieter, there will still be alcohol, crowds, loud music and long queues.

Is it safe to take kids to carnival?

Notting Hill carnival is well policed but as with any big event, always keep an eye on your children and your valuables.

It's good to be prepared, so here are some top tips on bringing kids to carnival and making sure they have a great time:

  • Arrive early to beat the crowds.
  • Although there'll be food and drink, bring a packed lunch and plenty of water just in case.
  • Portable travel potties are a top idea as the queues for loos are often lengthy.
  • Check your route before you travel with TfL.
  • Find a comfortable spot where you and your kids can rest.
  • Write a label with your contact details on and stick it onto your child's clothing in case you get separated.
