If there's one thing more satisfying than spending money, it's saving it. With that in mind, get out and about in town for less this weekend with these free events taking place around our fair capital...

Saturday

Bucket in the square:
It's the premiere of new film The Bucket List this Saturday in Leicester Square. The film's about Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman completing a list of everything they want to do before they die.

Whether it's any good still remains to be seen, what is certain is that there will be a plethora of stars and hot WAGs to ogle in Leicester Square - crowds will start gathering at about midday.

Hands on Science:
Not at the Science Museum as you might expect, this foray into all things weird about the science of matter takes place at the Tate Modern in the Starr Auditorium from 2 to 3 pm - seating is on a first-come, first served basis and children under eight aren't admitted (and they probably wouldn't understand anyway).

Painted Idols:
This one's for film fans and fame enthusiasts. Award winning artist Paul Karslake is the man behind this interesting collection of famous faces including the likes of Al Pacino, Twiggy, and the Rolling Stones. The exhibiton explores peoples 'rise to fame and their elevation to iconic status' - It's at the Scream Galley on Bruton Street and is open from 11am to 4pm on Saturday.

Sunday:

17 years of Glastonbury:
Reminisce about festivals of yore with this exhibition of 17 years of Glastonbury's history. This year's ticket registration lottery is well underway - so this exhibition is a great remedy for the unlucky ones who didn't bag a ticket, and an exciting warm-up for those that did. It's on at the Commonwealth Club on Northumberland Avenue, closest station is Charing Cross.

Plans for a plinth:
Head to the National Gallery to have a look at the artistic monstrosities planned for Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth. Will it be the rusted car or the giant bottled ship? You can also make suggestions on what you would like to see up there.

Japanese wrappings and trappings:
See some of the treasures of the Far East at the Horniman museum in Forest hill. There's an exhibition of intricate Japanese textiles and stunning Kimonos featuring stunning hand-sewn designs. Entry is free (of course). The museum is on London road, Forest Hill.

Brick Lane bike polo:
This event is sooo Brick Lane. It's polo - but on bikes. Get yourself down to the basketball court at the corner of Brick Lane and Shacklewell Street if you want to join in or just spectate. Mallets and balls are provided, skinny jeans and aviators optional.
