London 2012 Olympic gold medallist Ed McKeever took to the Thames yesterday to launch National Go Canoeing Week 2013.

Aimed at furthering the efforts of the Olympic legacy and engaging Londoners in sporting activities right on their doorstep, Go Canoeing Week runs until May 26 at various locations across the city.

We caught up with the former World Champion kayaker to see why he thinks canoeing and kayaking could be just the thing to get Londoners going…

Following Team GB’s success on the water last year how important for the growth of the sport are events like Go Canoeing Week?

There has been a real buzz around the sport following the 2012 Olympics and the work that Go Canoeing does year-round is a great way to make the most of this at grass-roots level.

Go Canoeing Week is a real celebration of our sport, whether you’ve never tried it before or are an advanced paddler. There are lots of activities taking place locally and nationally to get involved in.

What sort of activities can people get involved through the Go Canoeing initiative?

There are loads of activities people can get involved in at over 400 canoe and kayak clubs and centres during Go Canoeing Week. Starter sessions, demo days and guided tours are ideal for beginners to get their first taste of paddling whilst canoe trails offer something for the more advanced paddler and those seeking adventure.

How did you first get involved in kayak?

It was when I was around 12 or 13, a school friend of mine was a member at a local club and I went along with him one day – after the first session I was hooked.

My advice would be to just get down to your local club give it a go. It’s an easy skill to pick-up and a fantastic way to spend an afternoon.

What are the health and fitness benefits?

Whether you are young or old, going for a paddle can improve your anaerobic and aerobic fitness as well as building up your muscular strength. It’s also a low-impact sport so there is a lower risk of injury.

Is canoeing a good day out for the family?

With so many different activities available at canoe clubs and centres you’re sure to be able to find something fun for the whole family to take part in. Going for a paddle is a great day out, taking in the sights of England’s waterways from a unique perspective in the water. It’s also really therapeutic and relaxing.

National Go Canoeing Week will be taking place across England between Saturday May 18 – Sunday May 26 2013. To find out what activities are taking place at a club near you, whatever your ability, click here.
