Free, public 'Play Me I'm Yours'-style DJ Decks come to Portobello Road

Londoners who’ve always dreamt of DJ superstardom can all but guarantee themselves a audience this week, by spinning on public decks which have been set up on Portobello Road.

Inspired by the ‘Play Me I’m Yours’ pianos across London, the decks are free and open for anyone to come along to and have a go at mixing a track.

The site will be running from 11am until 8pm on the corner of Portobello Road and Tavistock Road from today, Wednesday October 12, until Friday October 14. The decks, which are billed as ‘professional quality’, will come preloaded with a broad array of tracks and step-by-step instructions for beginners.

For those whose experience is limited to pressing the ‘DJ’ button on a school keyboard, London duo The Glitter Beats will be on hand to give advice today, with DJ David Beiger lending a hand on Thursday and Friday.

Blind Pig Cider are behind the publicity stunt. Emma Sherwood Smith, of the brand, said: “As most will know, the world of DJing is beset with rules – such as don’t approach the DJ or make requests, and absolutely never touch the hardware… But we’re actively asking people to do exactly that. We want to hear them mixing tracks you may not expect to hear together and prove you can love music and still not take yourself too seriously.”
