The eastern façade of Covent Garden’s market building has been transformed into a piece of art using 32,000 square feet of mirror, put in place to hide renovation works.

Instead of simply using scaffold, the Grade II* building is dressed in 67 mirrors, entitled ‘Reflect London’. Design agency Sculptivate and creative advisors Verrecchia & Partners both worked on the piece, which will stay in place for around eight months.

Behind the art, Sushisamba are moving into a 9,000 square foot residence in the Opera Terrace, where they'll have rooftop views over the piazza. Sushisamba are most famous for their restaurant on the 39th floor of the Heron Tower, which is the second highest eatery in London.

Beverly Churchill, creative director of Covent Garden, said: “The refurbishment of the Market Building heralds a new era for Covent Garden so we wanted to take a moment to reflect, and encourage our visitors to do the same.

We like to surprise so, rather than opt for traditional hoardings, we’ve created something more visually arresting for our visitors to discover.”

Presently, the unusual artwork seems popular with those looking to take distorted bathroom-mirror style selfies.
