Alternative Christmas at the Southbank

Lighten up: Anya Gallaccio will be designing the Christmas lights at Southbank Centre this year
5 April 2012

The Southbank Centre will be featuring a range of performances and free family events as part of their Christmas programme.

Turner Prize nominee Anya Gallaccio, who is famous for creating site-specific installations, has been commissioned to create some artist-designed Christmas lights.

Meanwhile, continuing the art theme, David Batchelor's 2006 commission Festival Remix will be returning to illuminate the site.

The Queen Elizabeth Hall plays host to the magical fairytale of Rapunzel from 18 December, with tickets priced between £15-£28.

'Living cartoon' Ennio Marchetto is also making a return to Southbank with his one-man origami show that proved successful last year.

Among the free events on offer over the Christmas period will be a Festive Ballroom series that includes a tea dance and Salsa Jam.

Alongside this, the Ballroom in the Royal Festival Hall will be transformed by set designer Michael Vale to provide the platform for free daytime performances and evening gigs.

The Centre is also hosting an inaugural 'Slow Food Market' from 20-23 December where a Christmas market, housed outside the Royal Festival Hall on Southbank Centre Square, will feature more than 20 stalls offering fresh and preserved foods.
