It may only just be December, but The X Factor is already celebrating Christmas week in the semi-finals of the competition.

With the artists taking on beloved festive classics, last boy band standing 5 After Midnight tackled East 17’s Stay Another Day – complete with white puffer jackets.

But one person in the studio wasn’t familiar with the legendary ballad.

“I didn’t know this song before,” admitted Nicole Scherzinger, confusing the ‘stay now’ lyric for ‘steak house’.

However, she did rave about the performance in her comments, saying: “Boys, you proved that you can do it without all the dancing around.

"You stripped it back and you focused on your vocals.”

Viewers couldn’t contain their surprise that Scherzinger wasn’t previously aware of the 1994 Christmas number one.

The rest of the judges were also positive about 5 After Midnight’s song.

“Guys, I thought that was absolutely fantastic,” Simon Cowell said. ”That’s what we’ve been waiting for! You had presence, you had personality, you’ve come back fighting.”

"It was just you guys and the song, and it was nice and festive and warm.”
