Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?: Jeremy Clarkson asks the million pound question as the hit quiz show returns

The last time a contestant reached the final stage was back in 2006

Classic quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is back, with yet more hopefuls vying to take home the legendary £1 million cash prize.

After spending four years off the air, the much-loved format returned in 2018 with new host Jeremy Clarkson at the helm.

The reboot proved such a hit with viewers that it has since prompted two further mini series, with the latest set to start tonight.

Here’s everything you need to know before the show returns.

Who presents Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

Reboot: Jeremy Clarkson has taken over from Chris Tarrant
ITV / Stellify Media

After long term host Chris Tarrant stepped down from the quiz master's chair in 2014, having presented every episode of the show since its debut in 1998, ITV bosses recruited The Grand Tour's Jeremy Clarkson to take his place.

The 58-year-old was met with a largely positive reception from viewers when he joined the show last year, and has even prompted a slight shake-up to the programme's famous format. In addition to the three classic lifelines (phone a friend, ask the audience and 50:50), contestants can now 'ask Jeremy' for his advice when answering a question, though the presenter has previously joked that he is "almost entirely useless" at providing guidance.

What will happen in the new series of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

As ever, contestants will have to answer general knowledge questions correctly, with each success bringing them closer to the £1 million prize.

If they get stuck along the way, they can use their four lifelines for a little additional assistance (though as previous episodes have shown, sometimes the Phone a Friend option can be more trouble than it's worth...)

The series is set to get off to an exciting start, with Clarkson asking the £1 million question for the first time.

The "extraordinary" contestant is an English teacher from Birmingham, who struggled to answer the £2,000 question earlier in the game and had to use a lifeline to continue.

The last time a player got so far in the competition was back in 2006, and to date only five lucky winners have taken home the £1 million prize.

What time is Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? on TV?

The new series will kick off at 9pm on ITV on March 4, with the next four episodes airing on consecutive nights this week at the same time.
