Where is Piers Morgan today and why isn't he presenting GMB?

Morgan has announced his Covid-19 test has come back negative - but he still hasn't returned to his usual slot on GMB.

Good Morning Britain fans received a surprise this morning when they discovered Piers Morgan had been replaced by Ben Shephard.

The controversial broadcaster, 55, was absent from both Monday and Tuesday morning's edition of GMB after he announced on Twitter that he had started to display "a mild symptom" of the deadly Covid-19 virus.

However, while Morgan's test has come back negative, he is staying off work until his doctors give him the all-clear to return to GMB.

Morgan told his 7.4 million followers: "My COVID-19 test was negative. I was advised to take the test by my doctor after developing possible coronavirus symptoms, and was entitled to do so as a Govt-designated essential worker. I'll be back on GMB as soon as my doctor advises I'm OK to return to work."

Morgan's GMB co-host, Susanna Reid, joked: "We send our very best wishes to you, Piers, and we'll be on our best behaviour while you're not here."

Speaking about Morgan's condition, GMB's resident Dr Hilary Jones explained on Monday that he was doubtful whether Morgan had contracted the disease, but stressed caution was essential: "Well, remember that the symptoms are well defined as to why people should self-isolate," he said. "I spoke to Piers [on Monday] and he doesn't have symptoms normally associated with Covid-19, but as he said, out of an abundance of precaution he has taken the test."

While some questioned why Reid and Dr Hilary were not now self-isolating, Reid then explained the studio had been practising strict social distancing measures.

"We are 15 metres apart, you two are more than two metres apart, so we've been adhering to the social distancing rules. Social distancing is the most important thing," Dr Hilary added.

Morgan's absence was a hot topic amongst viewers - while many were pleased to hear he was not suffering from the deadly virus, others questioned why he was defined as a key worker

Shephard is expected to fill in for Morgan over the next few days.

Over 28,000 people have now died in the UK due to coronavirus, with Monday seeing a further 288 people pass away from the disease - the lowest recorded number since March.

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays from 6am on ITV
