Renee Zellweger will make her Netflix debut in What/If, a psychological thriller that aims to grapple with big questions about morality and free will.

The star, who is best known for her iconic role in the Bridget Jones movies, plays a mysterious motivational speaker who is not above using her powers of persuasion to manipulate others.

The ten-part series marks the Oscar-winning star’s first foray onto the small screen: her only other television credit was a voice role on King of the Hill back in 2001.

According to Netflix, What/If explores the ripple effects of what happens when “acceptable” people start behaving in an unacceptable way.

Shadowy benefactor Anne (Zellweger) makes a dubious, morally murky offer to a young newlywed couple who are struggling financially. If they accept, it could drastically change their lives for the better - but it might just cause their relationship to collapse in the process.

The series was written by Revenge creator Mike Kelley, who has previously also penned scripts for teen drama The OC.

Joining Zellweger are former Glee star Blake Jenner and Castle Rock’s Jane Levy, who play newlyweds Lisa and Sean.
