The show follows the seemingly picture-perfect Richardson family in the 90s, centering on journalist and landlord Elena Richardson. However, their lives are changed forever when a new mother and daughter arrive in Shaker Heights, Ohio, as it forces the entire town to re-evaluate their lives.

“They have this commonality between them, which is that they believe they're doing what's best for their children," showrunner Liz Tigelaar told Entertainment Weekly. “Through the story, that notion gets unravelled in both of them. They each hold up a mirror to the other, and the results change their lives, the lives of their families, and the lives of the people in the town."
