Our pick of tonight's viewing delves into the DNA of hit singles

What: How To Make A Number One Record

The pitch: A new one-hour music documentary about, well, how to make a number one record

When: BBC Four, 9pm

Why should I watch? Because the concept of a number one single still holds as much weight in popular culture as it did 40 years ago. This new documentary highlights how the music industry - and the business of getting a #1 chart-busting single - has changed over the decades, with interviews from the people behind the hits that we all know and love. It also questions the factors involved in making a hit - does a killer tune inevitably find its way into the public consciousness, or does it require an extra push from radio DJs and record companies to become a world-conquering smash?

Where else can I watch it? Repeats on 00.20am on Saturday morning, and at 11.55pm on Sunday. Also on iPlayer.
