Once a TV staple, iconic music show Top of the Pops could be returning to the screen ‘with a twist’ according to one BBC boss.

Speaking to The Telegraph, BBC director of music Bob Shennan revealed that a new music show could be in the works, but it would not be a weekly show or be named Top of the Pops.

“Top Gear was reborn and reinvented to be about much, much more than cars,” he said. “I guess that’s a good analogy for what we’re talking about. We’re not just talking about straight music; we’re talking about extra elements and uniqueness.

“If just bringing back Top of the Pops was such a straightforward and obvious thing to do, somebody on some channel would have done it.”

One new format could be to follow the success of one-off special Adele at the BBC, which saw the world-renowned singer take part in an interview and a comedy skit, as well as performing her greatest hits and new material.

“That show was a really impressive coup, a world exclusive,” Shennan said. “It would be great to think that we could do that again, and Graham [Norton] would be the perfect host for it. Obviously the music industry wants us to do it.”

A Top of the Pops Christmas Special has been filmed, with Fearne Cotton on hosting duties. The presenter tweeted about how the filming has left her “feeling very Christmassy indeed”.

Here’s to wondering what musical TV treats we’ll be given in 2016.
