The first episode of the new Channel 4 series of the Great British Bake Off has broken records for the broadcaster after 1.1 million people streamed the series on catch up website All 4.

This makes the baking competition the most-watched show on the on-demand service.

Combined with the live overnight ratings of 6.5 million and viewers who caught up with the show via repeats on other C4 channels, the episode attracted a total audience of 11.5 million people.

The overnight figure for the first episode represented Channel 4’s highest rating for 5 years, after the opening ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games.

Despite Bake Off’s success in its new home, it still hasn’t been able to match the viewing figures the competition attracted during its time on the BBC.

To put the figures into perspective, the 2015 finale in which Nadiya Hussain was crowned winner drew 13.4 million viewers.

Channel 4 will of course be hoping that the figures rise as the series continues, however this week’s statistics show that the episode two’s ratings were slightly down on the first show’s at 6 million.

The drop in viewers could be due to a scheduling clash with the programme’s former broadcaster the BBC which is showing hit drama Doctor Foster at 9pm, with Bake Of on C4 ending at 9.15 pm.

The Great British Bake Off airs on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
