Viewers praised Jeremy Clarkson after he appeared to make a sly dig at Chris EvansTop Gear reboot on the latest episode of The Grand Tour.

Clarkson, 56, was talking about how the BMW M4 GTS failed to meet expectations after a test drive against the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

“I admire BMW for really trying with that car, I really do,” he said. “But my god, they made a hash of it.”

Seemingly making a dig at Top Gear, he continued: “I’m trying to think of a metaphor, for someone who’s really tried their hardest with something, and it hasn’t worked.”

Clarkson looked at his co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May, who both looked confused, before adding: “No, nothing’s coming to mind.”

Viewers picked up on the dig with one tweeting: “The jab at Top Gear was the f****** joke of the year #TheGrandTour.”

Another posted: “Jeremy mocking Chris Evans failed Top Gear on #TheGrandTour was savage.”

A third commented: “Oh ho ho, that sly dig at Top Gear was sumptuous. #TheGrandTour.”

Evans took over as host on the BBC motoring show after Clarkson was dropped from the BBC over a fracas with producer Oisin Tymon.

His debut alongside Matt LeBlanc was met with criticism as people bemoaned the new line-up and Evans’ “shouty” presenting style.

The BBC Radio 2 DJ stepped down as host after one series, saying he gave it his “best shot”.

The Grand Tour is on Amazon Prime.
