Will Chief Jim Hopper be back?

Stranger Things 4 is a long way from landing on our TV screens but the hype is already beginning to build.

Season 3 of the hit show left us with a host of unanswered questions, especially over the fate of some of the show's biggest characters.

Not only were we left in limbo over the exit of Eleven, Mike Wheeler, Joyce Byers and Jonathan Byers, but in arguably the most heartbreaking scene in the series so far, we also witnessed the supposed demise of police chief Jim Hopper.

But just who is set to return for the fourth season of Stranger Things? Let's take a closer look...

Who is in the cast for Stranger Things 4?

The air date for season 4 is yet to be confirmed and Netflix is also yet to reveal details of the cast members returning - but that doesn't mean we can't speculate over who could appear.

There's one return we can probably rule out - Billy Hargove (Dacre Montgomery) will not be back as he died in season three. Though this doesn't mean he couldn't make a cameo appearance as Bob Newby did.

The status of the main characters is up in the air but we're expecting returns for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike Wheeler (Fin Wolfhard), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin).

Similarly, Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton), Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke), Erica Sinclair (Priah Ferguson), Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono) and Murray Bauman (Brett Gelman) are all likely to return too.

But wait - where's Hopper? One of the biggest questions we had at the end of Stranger Things 3 was whether our favourite maverick cop survived.

Hopper appeared to have died when Joyce shut the gate to the Upside Down however, a mid-credits scene at the end of the last episode cuts to Russian soldiers guarding prisoners who are instructed to feed a prisoner to a captive Demogorgon - but they are warned not to feed "the American" to the creature.

This has led fans to speculate that Hopper isn't dead, but instead escaped to the Upside Down during the explosion, where he was captured by the Russians.

David Harbour's Instagram account is littered with tongue-in-cheek references about his character's possible return.

Meanwhile Andrey Ivchenko, who played the assassin Grigroi, has hinted of his return, telling the San Diego Comic-Con: "What I know is he's dead, but who knows?"

We can probably expect some new cast members too. TVLine has reported the Duffer brothers are looking to cast four new male roles - one adult and three teenagers. The three teens supposedly include a "metalhead", "jock" and a "stoner".
