No matter how bleak the world looks, you can always rely on South Park to poke fun at it.

Cartoon creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are ready to let rip about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic – with both sides of the debate on how to handle the virus likely to be satirised in the show’s first ever hour-long broadcast.

The episode, creatively titled The Pandemic Special, will follow the residents of the Colorado town as they grapple with Covid-19 as it “presents continued challenges” to their lives.

Here’s how to watch the opening episode of season 24 in the UK.

The Pandemic Special will air over in the States first, on Wednesday, September 30 on Comedy Central.

As it’s an hour long special, the show will air earlier than usual, starting at 8pm US time.

For those who miss it, the show will be able to watch from Thursday, October 1 on the US streaming service HBO Max.

The South Park Pandemic Special will only be available at first to US audiences.

HBO Max is not currently available in the UK, as Sky has an exclusivity deal with HBO with shows from the prestige American channels first broadcast on Sky (usually on Sky Atlantic).

The exclusivity deal also sees a multitude of American titles on NOW TV – with South Park being one of them. A spokesperson for NOW TV confirmed the 24th season of the cartoon - including the pandemic special - will be on the streaming platform later this year.

South Park also airs on Comedy Central, and is available to stream on Netflix.

What is the special about?

Eric Cartman has been loving life in lockdown, but is fuming when the easing of restrictions means he has to change out of his pyjamas and head back to school.

Turning up at friend Kyle Broflovski’s house to discuss a plan, Kyle is left horrified that Eric has appeared without a mask – and warns him about spreading germs.

Elsewhere, Randy Marsh sees the ongoing pandemic as an opportunity – and he is somewhat responsible for the ongoing spread of the virus.

A synopsis of the episode reads: “Randy comes to terms with his role in the Covid-19 outbreak as the ongoing pandemic presents continued challenges to the citizens of South Park.

“The kids happily head back to school but nothing resembles the normal that they once knew; not their teachers, not their homeroom, not even Eric Cartman.”
