Sherlock creator Mark Gatiss has teased fans by posting a cryptic tweet about series four.

Gatiss, 49 – who plays Sherlock's brother Mycroft in the BBC show – sent Twitter into a frenzy after he posted an image of Sherlock’s skull ornament sporting a pair of glasses.

He captioned the image: “I spy Series Four...#Sherlock.”

The image appears to indicate that filming is underway for the next instalment.

Fans took to Twitter to tell Gatiss not to "tease" while another joked: "No that is not series four, that is a fan waiting for series four."

The third series of the hit BBC show finished in 2014, but fans were treated to a special, The Abominable Bride, in January.

Executive producer and co-creator Stephen Moffat confirmed in 2014 that the fourth series had been commissioned.

Plot details for the next series are scarce, but it was recently reported that Tom Hiddleston could be joining Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman on set.

Sherlock this week missed out on a BAFTA TV award nomination as The Abominable Bride aired on January 1 - making it too late and only eligible for next year's awards bash.
