By all means, Angler’s Lodge should be a successful business.

On the edge of Yellowstone National Park, it’s a last stop for travellers before they reach miles of wilderness, with stunning views and a homely cabin feel. It was even built by the owner.

But it’s on Gordon Ramsay’s Hotel Hell for a reason – against the odds, the business is struggling.

As with the best episodes of Ramsay’s turning-around-a-failing-business shows, there’s an emotional story at play here.

The Eby family, who own and run Angler’s Lodge together, suffered a terrible tragedy, losing a son aged just 10.

“When we lost that little boy, our life stopped,” says mother Dede. “I went to bed for three years, and I didn’t get up.”

The boy's death happened just as the business was starting to flag, leading to some dark and difficult times for the family and their Lodge.

“They couldn’t put their whole heart into it, because their heart was broken,” explains daughter Savannah.

But despite the family tragedy, the hotel can’t thrive with dirty sheets, smelly furnishings, frozen food, and ‘depressing’ décor. Enter Ramsay, there to break everything down, and help to build it back up again.

He’s on good form as usual, asking questions like: “Is that risotto, or some of the plaster that your dad left over from building the new lodge?”

Ramsay has his work cut out in the start of the show's third series not only to turn things around in the hotel and the restaurant and save the business, but help the Eby family make a new start.
