Professor Green discussed his father’s suicide during an emotional appearance on Newsnight.

The rapper, who was promoting new documentary Suicide and Me, urged people to break the stigma attached to the issue.

Speaking to Evan Davis, he said: “To think about what anyone goes through - I think that this is the one thing that I hope comes from the programme is that we change to perception of people who take their own lives.

“There's this ignorance towards it as it only helps the taboo and creates more stigma around it.”

He added: “People who take their own lives are not selfish; they often think quite the opposite.”

The musician – real name Stephen Manderson – whose father took his own life, was then asked what he’d like to say to him now.

Clearly overwhelmed by the question, he tearfully responded: “You muppet. You idiot.”

Green went on to urge male viewers not to be ‘ashamed’ of crying and showing emotion.

He said: “Don't think less of yourself for crying.”

Speaking in his documentary, he says: “It’s not a topic that anyone really wants to talk about, you know. You want to empty a room, then you bring up suicide.

“I would like to highlight the severity of the situation and bit by bit remove the taboo that surrounds it.”
