Piers Morgan took aim at his ex-neighbour’s cat as the Good Morning Britain team discussed England’s disappointing semi-final defeat.

And Morgan, who appeared on a Thursday for the first time in a long while, joked that he knows who he wanted to blame for the heartbreaking loss.

He explained: “I mentioned the lucky cat, the French neighbours had this cat which just used my house for years like a sort of second den.

Feeling catty: Piers Morgan blamed his French neighbours for moving away

“That cat had been at every one of the England games, watching with me. Lying around. Last night I was on my own, completely on my own and I waited…I left every window open, no sign and then I realised the neighbours moved out yesterday!

“I knew they were but I thought they might leave the cat. They took the cat, the cat didn’t turn up. England go out.

“So I’m actually blaming my French – crucially – neighbours. Who would we have played on Sunday, the French. They knew what that cat meant to me.”

After Wednesday’s defeat, Morgan was one of many to lavish praise on manager Gareth Southgate and the team’s campaign.

Posting to his 6.5 million followers, the broadcaster wrote: “Gareth Southgate & his young England team did the country proud.

“We went a lot further than I thought we would & performed with great credit on & off the pitch.

“Losing sucks but the future looks very exciting with this talented group of players.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
