BBC Breakfast welcomed an unconventional guest on the morning of January 19, with an orangutan appearing to join Charlie Stayt and Steph McGovern in the studio.
However, in an even stranger twist the orangutan was actually a lifelike robot model.
The uncanny ape was used to film new BBC One nature show Spy in the Wild, which uses hidden camera technology to film its subjects.
The orangutan, named Beruti, appears in the latest episode of the show, airing on Thursday at 8pm.
“Beruti is absolutely fantastic,” said an impressed Stayt. “The idea is that Beruti is placed in the wild with real orangutans.
“It’s quite extraordinary. They get this fantastic footage, because one of his eyes has a camera in there so he can see and record what’s happening.”

McGovern was also wowed by the robotic double, adding: “The way it’s mimicking the actions of the orang-utan, its mouth, it’s quite incredible isn’t it.”
The previous episode of Spy in the Wild saw a group of Langur monkeys grieve when they dropped their robotic monkey from a height – and thought that they had killed it.
