Following the release of their final pre-hiatus album Made in the AM last week, the whirlwind isn’t over for One Direction quite yet.

Currently doing the rounds of promotional interviews, the four remaining members of the band are opening up about the departure of Zayn Malik earlier this year.

The latest person to bring up the topic is Jonathan Ross, who featured the group on the latest episode of his ITV chat show.

Asking who Zayn’s closest friend in the group was, Louis Tomlinson claimed it was “maybe” him.

“We all kind of noticed that he wasn’t thoroughly enjoying it, and we were,” Tomlinson explained. “It can be an intense job at times and I think it got a little bit too much for him, and he wanted to be in a different place, and that’s fair enough. You know, he’s gone his own way now, so fair dos.”

However, things took a turn for the awkward when Ross asked if Tomlinson was still close with Malik after the split, at which point Tomlinson pulled a strained expression.

He said that the last time they spoke was “a couple of weeks ago, or something”, at which point fellow guest Michael McIntyre yelled: “Let’s Facetime him!” - an idea which wasn't well received.
