Netflix has released its first biannual report collated from data on its most frequently watched shows and viewing hours.

'What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report' covers 18,000 titles — representing 99 per cent of all viewing on Netflix — and nearly 100 billion hours viewed in six months.

The streaming giant has arguably taken its greatest step yet towards data transparency with its comprehensive report of titles viewed between January to June this year. Also featured were release dates for titles and whether they were available globally.

A Netflix spokesperson said: "This is a big step forward for Netflix and our industry. We believe the viewing information in this report — combined with our weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists — will give creators and our industry deeper insights into our audiences, and what resonates with them."

So what were Netflix's top shows this year? Here's a top-10 list.

Taking the top spot is the thriller series The Night Agent with a staggering viewing time of more than 812 million hours. Season 1, which was piloted in March, follows a low-level FBI agent who works nights in the basement of the White House, manning a phone line for undercover spies that never rings — until one day it does. In a frenzy, the protagonist Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) is plunged into a deadly conspiracy.

2. Ginny & Georgia: Season 2

Anyone who has searched for a tangled web of drama involving family, friendships, romance, and crime will know that Ginny & Georgia fits the bill perfectly. Season 2, which scored second place in Netflix's report with more than 665 million hours, shows Georgia as she navigates life and attempts to restore her relationship with her teenage daughter Ginny who has run away from home. The latter part of the series sees their relationship become increasingly complicated as secrets darken and murder plots threaten to overtake their lives.

3. The Glory: Season 1

It depicts the life of a woman years after she survived horrific abuse in high school. She sets up an elaborate revenge scheme to make the perpetrators pay for their crimes.

Next to follow The Glory are:

6. You: Season 1

7. La Reina del Sur: Season 3

8. Outerbanks: Season 3

9. Ginny & Georgia: Season 1
