Netflix has announced a live-action reboot of classic anime series Cowboy Bebop.
The hit series, which originally ran on Japanese television from 1997 to 1998, will chart the adventures of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, and Radical Ed.
The foursome are a crew of bounty hunters looking for the solar system’s most dangerous criminals, who will now receive the live-action treatment.
Netflix confirmed that the rumours from last year were true and that a remake will be released globally in time to come.
Announcing the news on Twitter, the streaming giant said: “Original anime creator Shinichiro Watanabe will he brought on to consult, too. The first episode is written by Thor: Ragnarok’s Chris Yost.”
The new series will consist of 10 episodes, which is 16 less than the original small-screen run two decades ago.
Cowboy Bebop was a huge success in Japan, lauded by viewers and critics alike, before making an impact in the US in the 2000s.
The show isn’t the first to get a live-action reboot, with Netflix announcing earlier this year that they are adapting Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The animated series aired in the US for three series back in 2005 until 2008 before disappearing from its Nickelodeon home.
The news comes just hours after Netflix revealed they have snapped up the rights to a series of Roald Dahl’s classic novels .
The subscription platform has struck a deal with the late author’s estate to create a series of shows, slated for production next year, from classics including Matilda, The BFG and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.
