Viewers were left confused by the opening episode of the second series of Marcella.

The ITV drama returned for its second series on Monday night, with some viewers left baffled by the 'confusing' plot and wanting a recap.

The crime drama follows Anna Friel’s Marcella as a detective who suffers from blackouts, which sometimes lead her – and others – to think that she could have more to do with a crime than is let on.

In the series two opener, Marcella and her team begin to investigate the death of a child – Leo Priestley - (who, as luck would have it, was a friend of her son’s) found dead inside a wall.

But viewers were baffled by what was going on and failed to make sense of the show, rushing to social media to share their thoughts.

Writing on Twitter, one fan said: “The most confusing episode of #Marcella EVER.”

While another posted: “What a jumbled mess this is #confusing #shesnotwell #Marcella.”

“So I’m guessing there is no storyline link between this series and the last series of #Marcella ?? #confusing,” added a third.

While others couldn’t help but notice Marcella’s walk, prompting Friel to clear it up as “part of the character” on her own Twitter account.

Somebody mused: “Has she been asked to walk like that??? #Marcella.”

“Love this, but pretty dark right now and since when did she walk like she’s in a swamp #Marcella,” laughed a different viewer.

Marcella continues Monday at 9pm on ITV.
