The wait is over.

The trailer for the eagerly anticipated fifth series of BBC drama Luther has landed – and Alice Morgan is back.

The clip sees Idris Elba reprise his role as troubled DCI John Luther as he attempts to solve a string of indiscriminate killings in London with new recruit D.S Catherine Halliday, played by Wunmi Mosaku.

But he will also be joined by serial killer Alice Morgan, played by Ruth Wilson, who fans thought had died at the end of series four.

Morgan flashes up at the end of the teaser with a blood stained face as she makes to get in a red car.

Fans have waited three years for a new series – and it won’t be the last. Elba revealed series five “is not the end” but that fans should expect “some real changes”.

A synopsis for the upcoming series promises Luther will “immerse himself in the deepest depths of human depravity”.

Luther and Halliday will be “confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption”.

Elba recently opened up about the new series, telling reporters: “All I can say is we know how long the fanbase wait for the show, and we're never taking that lightly.

“So as much as we have to keep one eye on how do we not do what we've done before, at the same time saying to the audience, ‘This is Luther’, so you recognise the traits.”

The trailer comes days after the BBC tweeted out a new scene as an “early Christmas present”. The two minute clip shows Luther being tortured by crime boss George Cornelius, played by Patrick Malahide, who is demanding to know the whereabouts of his son Alistair.

A release date has yet to be announced.
