Love Island fans rushed to support Dr Alex George after new girl Rosie Williams 'friend-zoned' him – despite telling him she had “high hopes” for him on their date.

The public voted for the newcomer to go on a date with the unlucky-in-love doctor, shown on Thursday night, and the nation rejoiced as the pair appeared to hit it off.

During their romantic date, Alex and Rosie bonded over their high-profile jobs and proud parents, leading the solicitor to admit she has “high hopes” for Alex.

And while Alex told the Beach Hut that he was feeling “more positive” about the show after finding a “connection”, Rosie told the girls that she didn’t see it being anything more than friends with the medic.

Sitting down for a gossip, she revealed: “Oh lovely. He’s a lovely boy but I don’t see it being any more than friendship. But he’s lovely to talk to.”

Viewers couldn’t take the “betrayal” and rushed to Twitter to rally around Alex.

One wrote: “Wow a friendzone again? I’m sorry Alex #LoveIsland.”

While another said: "Poor Alex I feel so sorry for him I just want him to find love and be happy #LoveIsland.”

“Rosie, we thought you’d prove Alex wrong when he said you’ll fancy him but hunny you did us all dirty, betraying our poor Alex #LoveIsland,” somebody else posted.

Several fans joked that they would “never vote again” after Rosie’s relationship with Alex didn’t pan out.

Later in the episode, there was even more affection for poor Alex after he revealed he would still couple up with Samira because “she hasn’t had her chance on Love Island yet”.

Love Island continues Friday at 9pm on ITV2.
