Quiz is the most-watched TV drama of the year so far, official figures reveal.

The three-part series is based on the infamous Who Wants to be a Millionaire cheating scandal which saw Major Charles Ingram, his wife Diana and an accomplice named Tecwen Whittock convicted of cheating the game to win £1 milllion.

The first episode of the three-part series reached a total of 9 million viewers consolidated after seven days according to ITV.

It also garnered a further 1.1m viewers when it was rerun at 11:50pm, bringing the total viewers to over 10 million.

The series was particularly popular among younger viewers, averaging 1.5 million viewers in the 16 to 34 demographic, making it the highest rating drama for that age bracket since BBC One’s Line of Duty in May 2019.

Following the shows' popularity, lawyers representing the Ingrams, who have always maintained their innocence, have announced plans to appeal the cheating conviction.

Quiz stars Matthew Macfadyen and Sian Clifford as Charles and Diana Ingram, while Michael Sheen plays Who Wants to be a Millionaire presenter Chris Tarrant.

Aisling Bea, Mark Bonnar and Helen McCrory also feature.
