I’m A Celebrity 2020: Contestants, when it’s on and where it’s filmed

Who needs sunny weather and exotic critters when you’ve got a haunted castle and heavy rainfall? For the first time since its launch in 2002, ITV juggernaut I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here is heading to North Wales.

With an intriguing selection of stars on the line-up (after famously beating The Cube, Sir Mo Farah will be trying his hand at Bushtucker Trials) and the promise of Ant and Dec’s usual quips to lift our spirits, the reality series could be the perfect distraction to see us through lockdown 2.0.

Here’s everything you need to know before the series kicks off....

When will I’m A Celebrity start?

The launch episode will kick off at 9pm on Sunday November 15 on ITV, with subsequent instalments airing each evening on ITV for the duration of the competition (daily episodes mean it’s a real commitment, but at least it gets rid of the usual ‘what to watch’ conundrum - and thanks to Ant and Dec’s regular recaps, it’s not exactly an issue if you miss out on the odd episode).

Each series typically lasts around three weeks, so we can expect the final to fall in the first weekend of December.

How do I watch?

If you don’t have access to terrestrial channels, you can watch online on the ITV Hub, where you’ll also be able to catch up on any previous episodes you might have missed.

Which celebrities are taking part?

As ever, an eclectic bunch of stars has signed up to head to North Wales (presumably the high chances of rain didn’t put them off), Olympian Sir Mo Farah and Paralympian Hollie Arnold are representing the world of sport, while broadcaster Victoria Derbyshire has admitted that she’ll struggle being cut off from the news cycle when she heads into the I’m A Celeb camp.

Soap legends Beverley Callard (a fixture behind the bar in the Rovers Return in Coronation Street) and Shane Ritchie will also be taking part, alongside a more recent EastEnder, Jessica Plummer. Former Strictly star AJ Pritchard will swap the dance floor for the, erm, dirt floor, but he’ll have a familiar face in former colleague Tess Daly’s husband Vernon Kay. They’ll be joined by Radio 1 broadcaster Jordan North and writer and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher.

Where is I’m A Celebrity being filmed this year?

The coronavirus pandemic forced show bosses to look a little closer to home for a new location. This year’s contest will take place in Gwyrch Castle in Abergele, North Wales - marking the first time in the show’s 18-year history that it’s been filmed on British turf. The 19th century building is set in 250 acres of land - and is also thought to be the home of a handful of ghosts, including the spectre of the Countess of Dundonald, a former inhabitant.

How will the show work?

The celebrity contestants, along with the presenters and crew, are currently self-isolating to ensure that they can safely form a “bubble” when the show starts next weekend - meaning that they won’t have to adhere to social distancing once they’re in the camp (because a Bushtucker trial just wouldn’t really work if you could only come within two metres of your partner…)

This will mean that the show should look pretty much identical to the format we know and love - just as the team behind Bake Off have been able to recreate the show’s usual magic despite the pandemic. As the Bushtucker trials usually have an Aussie theme, we’re guessing this year’s round of watch-through-your-fingers tasks will include nods to the show’s new Welsh location.

What’s happened to Extra Camp?

Long-time fans of the show will know that you can usually get more jungle drama by switching over to ITV2 after each episode for spin-off series Extra Camp, most recently hosted by Joel Dommett, Emily Atack and Adam Thomas. Sadly, Extra Camp got the axe earlier this year, after ITV bosses determined it didn’t make sense to air such an expensive production in such a late slot.

This time around, Vick Hope will host a new I’m A Celeb-related panel show called The Daily Drop, which will air on the ITV Hub.

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here begins on ITV on November 15.
