I’m A Celebrity fans have called for a boycott of the show after contestant Jack Maynard was sensationally removed from the jungle.

The YouTuber quit the show amid controversy over tweets containing racist and homophobic slurs he posted from 2011-2013.

But some social media users defended him against criticism, calling the decision to take him out of camp "pathetic".

Some claimed that as the 22-year-old would have been between 16 and 18 at the time of the posts, he shouldn’t punished for mistakes made as a teenager.

One wrote: “ITV booting Jack Maynard out is ridiculous. Judge people based on their CURRENT beliefs and attitude. Everybody was young &dumb once. I used to use offensive words / jokes carelessly in my teens. I’ve never been homophobic or racist. Everybody grows and learns.”

Another tweeted: “Everyone one makes mistakes as a teenager. Kicking jack out for something he did when he was 15-16 is pathetic.”

Fans of Maynard felt so strongly about his exit that they created a hashtag #BringBackJack in an attempt to persuade ITV to allow him to return to the programme.

But according to representatives for Maynard, the star agrees with the decision to remove him.

“In the last few days Jack has been the subject of a succession of media stories which he has been unable to respond to," said his spokesperson.

“Since it is only fair that everyone should be aware of any allegations made against them and should also have the right to defend themselves, it was agreed it would be better to bring him out.

“Jack agrees with this decision which was made by his representatives and ITV, and thanks everyone who has supported him in the show this far.”

I’m A Celebrity continues Wednesday, November 22 at 9pm on ITV.
