Rav Bansal has been eliminated from The Great British Bake Off following an ‘unimaginative’ week.

The 28-year-old amateur baker was neck-and-neck with Andrew until his ‘messy’ and ‘samey’ floral showstopper didn’t meet up to Paul Hollywood’s standards on Wednesday night’s episode.

Instead of shedding a tear, the ever-smiling star told the camera: “I’m leaving here with a smile on my face and I couldn’t be happier’.

Rav also struggled with the signature challenge during botanical week as his citrus meringue pie was criticised for its lack of flavour and non-existence structure.

On the other end of the spectrum, Tom pulled it back to win Star Baker after struggling in the first round rounds.

Getting mightily high praise from Hollywood and Mary Berry, Tom was told that he has ‘cracked it’ with his genoise cakes during the three-tier floral showstopper round.

This week’s episode kicked off with a spot of rivalry as Selasi and Benjamina made near identical citrus meringue pies in the signature challenge.

Both using pineapple as their main ingredients, Benjamina claimed that she was the first one to come up with the recipe.

“It was my idea to do grapefruit. I think maybe he hacked into my laptop,” she joked.

Benjamina was praised for her ‘very, very good’ grapefruit flavouring while Selasi’s filling was described as being ‘too stiff’.

Andrew and Tom both struggled with their pies, while Jane and Candice were both praised for their flavours.

The technical challenge was to make two herb fougasse, which saw a shake up of the usual favourites.

Selasi found himself in last place, followed by Andrew, Candice, Jane, Rav and Benjamina while Tom came out on top.

The remaining contestants were up against it with their showstopper, given just four hours to make a three-tired floral cake.

Jane was forced to pour one of her cakes down the sink, while Rav’s piped flower decorations failed to set.

Candice impressed the judges with her four-tier cake, which had different layers to represent each season of the year.

Andrew was pulled up on his unambitious piping decoration on his showstopper while Rav’s icing was dubbed a ‘mess’.

Jane has a nightmare with her showstopper, which was overbaked and ‘messy’ after she was forced to throw one tier in the bin.

Selasi’s showstopper was the highlight of the episode, with both Berry and Hollywood dubbing his bake ‘perfect’.
