You know the drill with Grand Designs by now – sit down in your pyjamas surrounded by clutter and piles of ironing that need to be done, while watching architects make some of the most eye-popping living spaces imaginable.

Of course, before the wonderful end results are revealed, the average joe can at least enjoy the several years where the project is in ‘nightmarish building site’ mode – but with this latest series, prepare for some serious house-envy.

In Grand Designs: House of the Year, Kevin McCloud is visiting the houses that have been nominated for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) competition, full of stunning interiors, inventive uses of building materials, and plenty of huge glass panels.

In the first episode, McCloud casts his eye over houses designed for country life – from a low-budget abode made from shipping containers (which was itself featured in Grand Designs last year), a timber-themed farmhouse in Somerset, an ultra-eco house in Cambridgeshire, and one with a ‘mountain peak’-inspired roof.

Watch it and try not to feel bad about accommodation prices for tiny flats in London.
