The arrival of the New Year means the annual return of the Golden Globes is in sight. The 81st Golden Globes will see accolades bestowed as the 2024 award season kicks off.

Many will be using it to forecast early Oscar wins and to support their favourite A-list celebrities in film and TV.

Here’s all you need to know about the star-studded awards ceremony.

When are the Golden Globes?

The Golden Globes will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel on 7 January next Sunday beginning at 8pm Eastern time. It will run for approximately three hours.

This means that viewers in the UK will only begin to tune in from 1am on the morning of the 8th.

National World says that although last year, UK viewers could watch the Golden Globe Awards on Sky and NOW, this year the show will be available in the UK exclusively through streaming service Paramount+.

The first month of subscriptions is free before users begin paying £6.99 per month.

Who is hosting the Golden Globes 2024?

Award ceremonies require good entertainment to prevent its audiences from feeling too sluggish. This is why many are thrilled a comedian has been appointed the presenter role. American Comedian and actor Jo Koy is set to headline the award ceremony through its entirety this year.

He said in a statement: “I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special. I’m so excited to be hosting the Golden Globes this year. This is that moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud...”

Organisers of the ceremony have praised his “infectious energy and relatable humor”.

Previous hosts have included Ricky Gervais, duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and Jerrod Carmichael.

Who has been nominated?

Barbie is the top nominee for the 2024 award show, attracting a total of nine nominations. Oppenheimer trails closely behind with eight.

Barbie was the highest grossing movie of 2023 which lends itself to explaining why Margot Robbie has been nominated as best actress in a musical or comedy, Ryan Gosling as best supporting actor, and Greta Gerwig as best director. Three of Barbie's nine nominations are also for songs within the film.

Oppenheimer, which was released theatrically the same day as Barbie, is nominated for cinematic and box office achievement and best original score. Emily Blunt has also been nominated for her supporting role in the film.

Meanwhile, for television, which has its own division for nominations, Succession claimed the top spot for nominations, followed by Hulu’s The Bear.
