Fargo: everything you need to know about series three of the crime drama with Ewan McGregor

The hit US import is back with a fresh set of characters and a new case to crack
Seeing double: Ewan McGregor will play two brothers in the new series of the show
Channel 4

The chilling Coen brothers-inspired TV series is set to make its return to screens. With a new cast featuring Ewan McGregor as not one, but two characters, and brand new storylines, here’s everything you need to know series three of Fargo.

What’s it about?

The new series will introduce a completely fresh storyline, centred around a sibling rivalry. Two brothers, property mogul Emmit Stussy and parole officer Ray Stussy, have a falling out that causes chaos for the local Minnesotan community.

What happens in episode one?

Wishing to marry his girlfriend, Ray visits his businessman brother to ask for money to buy a ring. Emmit refuses and the resulting fight between the two brothers sets in motion a series of events that will cause problems for the town. Police officer Gloria Burgle finds herself wrapped up in the fall-out.

Will the old characters be back?

Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your perspective, series three will feature entirely new characters. This year, the cast is headed up by McGregor who will be doing a double turn as both Stussy brothers.

David Thewlis (best-known for playing Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter films) stars as gangster VM Varga, while Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) plays Ray’s girlfriend and bridge hustler, Nikki Swango.

Is it still set in Minnesota?

It wouldn’t be Fargo without the backdrop of the snowy North-Western US state of Minnesota. After the 1970s-set second series, the third run will jump forward, with events taking place in a town in the Midwest in 2010.

As with the first two series, the new episodes have been filmed on-location in various parts of Canadian province Alberta including, Calgary, Strathmore and High River.

When’s it on?

The new series of Fargo will air tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm. And those who are a bit rusty on the action from series one and two can catch up on both via the broadcaster’s on-demand service All 4.
