Ed Balls lifts Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain as he talks Strictly Come Dancing

The former Shadow Chancellor had previously struggled in a lift with his dance partner Katya Jones

Teasing his interview on the ITV breakfast show, Balls picked Reid up and span her around in front of the camera.

“I’m very impressed that you managed to lift me,” laughed Reid in the interview.

During the current series of Strictly, Balls struggled in a lift with his dance partner Katya Jones, in which it appeared that he might drop her live on air.

“We were really disappointed, because it was a good lift and we messed it up,” Balls explained.

However, the former Shadow Chancellor has been improving in the competition, and recently received his best scores yet – including an eight from judge Bruno Tonioli.

“To be fair to Len [Goodman], he’s always been the one who’s been saying ‘you’re entertaining, but you’re trying to do the dance steps’,” Balls said. “Getting an eight from Bruno was totally unexpected.

“The main thing is we’re just relieved to get to the end. The big danger is you start, and if something goes wrong, if you’re a professional you can adjust – but if you’re me and something goes wrong in the first ten seconds, it’s really hard to get it back on track.”

While he said he isn’t expecting to win, Balls also confirmed his ambition for the series.

"I'm not going to get to the end, but I could get to Blackpool and that's what I'm aiming for," he said.
