Iconic Japanese anime series Dragon Ball is set to return with a new TV series, titled Dragon Ball Super.

The new show will bring fans the first new Dragon Ball instalments in 18 years, since Dragon Ball GT ended in 1997. Best of all is the news that original series creator Akira Toriyama is working on the story for the new series.

Dragon Ball Super will be a sequel to Dragon Ball Z, which ran between 1989 and 1996. Though Dragon Ball GT was the most recent series in the franchise, Toriyama described it as a ‘side story’ of the original Dragon Ball series, as it wasn't based on his original manga series.

In an official statement, Toei Animation said: “[Dragon Ball Super] will bring together all the characters and tell their adventures after Son Goku’s fierce battle against Majin Buu.”

Osamu Nozaki, producer for Fuji Television, said: “Having loved Dragon Ball since childhood, it is very exciting to be a part of this project. Mr. Toriyama has developed a plot that’s not only a dream come true for Dragon Ball’s millions of fans, but one that will foster in a new generation of viewers.”

Fans of the series have been vocal in their excitement at the prospect of a new Dragon Ball series, celebrating the news on Twitter.
