Dr Alex sparks nationwide celebrations after ‘awkward’ kiss with Ellie – but Love Island viewers warn her to back off of Wes after he catches her eye

Will Wes be the new snake?

"Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore."

Adam has ditched Rosie for Zara, Wes’s wandering eye is making him rethink life as Laura’s toyboy and Dr Alex has actually been kissed.

It appears the more sunburnt he gets the more attractive he becomes. After more rejection than Adam has had dates in the villa, the painfully unlucky in love doctor managed to resuscitate his love life by kissing newcomer Ellie.

Dr Alex took the car saleswoman to dinner where he refrained from talking about how much he loved cars and voting, instead telling her she was “nice”.

“When you came down the stairs I instantly felt an attraction towards you, and a connection and things,” he said. “I think from talking to you, you’re very engaging, you’ve got beautiful eyes, you’re obviously very attractive. I think you’re a really nice girl. I get the impression that you are just a really open and honest, really nice girl.”

If we had a pound for every time he used the most boring adjective to describe Ellie we could set him up on Tinder Gold so he could find himself a wife when Ellie reveals she really has fallen for a slice of bread.

So after reminding Ellie he thought she was "gorgeous" he awkwardly lurched at her over the table – only to be rejected.

But thankfully she granted him permission for one kiss so he “just planted it. It was a held kiss. It was like a held, proper kiss.” Carpe Diem and all that.

Viewers hailed the moment more impressive than Harry Kane’s World Cup goal against Tunisia last night while others called for a public holiday.

But as Shakespeare said: “The course of true love never did run smooth.” It’s not the sliced bread Dr Alex needs to worry about. Or a bap or a pitta or bagel. It’s Wes.

The nuclear engineer student is questioning his old married couple romance with Laura in the wake of Ellie's arrival, while she has voiced her plans to get to know Wes.

Speaking in the Beach Hut, Wes said: “I think Ellie’s a really nice girl. She’s very like-minded. And obviously with her being 20 she’s sort of on the same chapter of her life as I am.”

Jubilation soon turned to anger as viewers warned Ellie to back off of Wes, while others feared she was never attracted to Dr Alex.

With Eyal silently realigning his chakras after coupling with Megan and Adam tunnel vision on Zara, could Wes be the villa’s new snake?

Love Island is on ITV2, weekdays at 9pm
