If you’re still trying to get used to Downton Abbey finally being over, don’t write off the hugely popular period drama quite yet.

Despite ending with a dramatic two-hour finale at Christmas, rumours about a possible film version are still floating around.

Now the show’s creator Julian Fellowes has elaborated on plans for a big-screen adaptation – and even though nothing is locked in, it sounds like it would be all steam ahead if it was greenlit.

Speaking on ITV’s News at Ten, Fellowes said: “I’d like a Downton film. I mean, I won’t be mysterious. If they decide to do it, I’ll certainly do it. I think it would be great.”

The Christmas Day finale pulled in 6.9 million viewers on the night, so it’s easy to see why a follow-on film would be a tantalising prospect.

The series is also a hugely popular export across the world, and proved a particularly big hit in America, where the Series 6 premiere saw 9.9 million viewers tune in.

However, with most of the characters – SPOILER ALERT – getting a happy ending, where could the story go next?

And with Maggie Smith seemingly reluctant to continue the role of the Dowager Countess, will a film have the same draw as the series?

We’ll have to wait and see – but for now it seems a light remains on in the abbey.
