The residents of Coronation Street have met grisly demises on the cobbles, from car accidents to electrocutions and murders - but show bosses are promising a “soap first” with the death of Kylie Platt.

The recovered drug user and mother-of-two will be killed off on Friday night’s episode in "harrowing" scenes which left soap stars in tears.

"I don't think I've ever read an ending like it," said actress Paula Lane, who plays Kylie.

"It's almost not Corrie, if you know what I mean, it's very different.

"I think the audience are going to get a real sense of shock and surprise."

Her death will come as a shock to husband David Platt who is planning to whisk his family to Barbados. Their getaway comes months after Kylie bludgeoned her ex-boyfriend Callum Logan to death with a wrench before burying him underneath Gail Platt’s bedroom floor.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Jack P Shepherd, who plays David, said he struggled to film Lane's final scenes.

Coronation Street's five most memorable deaths

"They were really harrowing to do," he said. "I just had to literally say words and not look at anyone, not look at Paula, or Helen [Worth]. The director had to tell me to actually give something.

"I couldn't, because that would have been it and we only had one or two shots."

Worth, who plays Gail Platt, added: "This was the most amazing scene. It was absolutely brilliant. I was in tears. As Jack was, I couldn't read the script either. It was just incredible."

Coronation Street is on ITV at 7:30pm
