Coronation Street was branded “insensitive” for playing Bye Bye Baby as Michelle Connor was rushed to hospital over fears for her unborn child.

Viewers watched as Connor – played by Kym Marsh – was hospitalised after suffering stomach pains during Leanne Battersby’s baby shower at the Rovers Return.

In keeping with the baby theme, Bay City Rollers’ Bye Bye Baby was played on the jukebox, but it sparked an outpouring of fury among viewers who described the song choice as “distasteful”.

One viewer tweeted: “Corrie playing Bye Bye Baby while Michelle is having a miscarriage? Distasteful.”

Another posted: “Bad call #corrie playing Bye Bye Baby while Michelle is losing her baby.”

Connor will lose her first child with her husband Steve McDonald in scenes set to air later this week.

Marsh – who suffered a miscarriage in 2009 with her former partner Jamie Lomas – opened up about the “heartbreaking” scenes which she described as “challenging” to film.

Speaking to OK! she said: “I have had to go to some really dark places when filming the heartbreaking scenes.

“But my family, friends and colleagues have been incredible.”

Recalling her own tragedy she said: “Losing a child is something that never leaves you, so revisiting those feelings as Michelle was a challenge.

“There was a counsellor on set at all times when we were filming the scenes.”
