Carey Mulligan has revealed it was “mega-uncomfortable” playing a pregnant police officer in a new drama while expecting her second child.

The actress, 32, plays a detective investigating the fatal shooting of a pizza delivery man in forthcoming BBC drama Collateral, alongside Billie Piper and John Simm.

She started filming with a “fake bump” to portray her character’s pregnancy but was seven months pregnant by the time shooting ended. She is understood to have given birth in August.

At a BFI screening last night, she said: “The biggest challenge was the night scenes. Towards the end I was seven months pregnant and was driving around London all night and the baby was just going mental, kicking and mega-uncomfortable.”

Mulligan said that while her pregnancy had to become part of the story it was “like... she’s a working mother and she’s getting through it”.

The actress had her first child, Evelyn Grace, with her husband, the musician Marcus Mumford, in September 2015 shortly after appearing in Sir David Hare’s stage play Skylight.

She said: “I worked with David pregnant already, on the second run of Skylight, so when this came my way I said ‘I really want to do it but I’m five weeks pregnant’.”

The drama is due to be broadcast on BBC2 next month. Sir David, 70, said: “We were trying to make it as fast as possible before she had the baby.”
