Dance group Mersey Girls and elderly singing duo The Pensionalities impressed the public in the fourth Britain’s Got Talent semi-final and made it through to the last stage of the show.

The pensioner double act from Doncaster (consisting of Henry Hall, 84, and Malcolm White, 75) charmed the audience and viewers at home with their cheeky and endearing rendition of One Direction’s History, coming first in the vote.

Meanwhile Mersey Girls (a group of five teenagers from the Wirral) mixed ballet and contemporary dance in a performance which saw them flip, fly and twirl across the stage, brought the judges to their feet and won them the runner up spot.

The fivesome broke the nation’s hearts after they revealed in their audition that star dancer Julia Carlile suffers from scoliosis and is set to undergo surgery that may prevent her from being able to dance again.

Alesha Dixon was so touched by the teenager’s emotional tale and the group’s skills that she pressed her Golden Buzzer sending them straight through to the semi-final.

The dancers gained an outpouring of support on social media from members of the public and even saw a royal family member reach out to them.

After a visit to Buckingham Palace to lunch with Princess Eugenie, the Mersey Girls returned to the Britain’s Got Talent stage to wow the crowd once more.

Just missing out on a place in the final show was singer/songwriter Reuben Gray who penned and performed a song in tribute to his girlfriend.

The other acts who weren’t successful in Thursday night’s semi-final were Angelicus Celtis, Paws with Soul, John the Hoop Guy and Johnny Awsum.

The next live semi-final will air on Friday June 2 at 7.30pm on ITV.
