Simon Cowell was put on the spot during the first Britain’s Got Talent live semi-final when Amanda Holden urged him to propose to girlfriend Lauren Silverman.

The music mogul was left open-mouthed when his co-judge suggested that he pop the question after watching gymnastic team Sparton Resurrection.

Discussing the act, which ended with a proposal, Holden criticised the group for not having a ‘bigger ending’.

Cowell hit back: “How was that not a big ending? What’s a bigger ending than a proposal?”

“Well it would be a big ending for you, Simon,” Holden said. “You asked for that. I did that for Lauren,” she added.

After a shocked gasp from the audience, David Walliams lightened the mood by asking when he would be getting a marriage offer from Cowell.

Speaking directly into his microphone, Cowell then asked, “will you marry me?”

While the proposal seemed to be directed at Walliams, fans took to Twitter to question whether it was actually meant for other half Silverman.

“Did @SimonCowell and @davidwalliams just get engaged #BGTSemiFinal @BGT?", one person wrote.

“@SimonCowell did you just propose to your girlfriend?. Do it again, properly this time. Look right down that camera;) xx,” another added.

Nine of the 40 final acts performed for the public vote on Sunday night’s first live semi-final, ahead of a week of live shows.

Acts including singer Richard Bayton, Kathleen Jenkins, Total TXS and Darren Altman took to the stage to perform.
